I truly believe that no matter how complex it looks or sounds or actually is, it is never so complex that it cannot be understood or explained in simple language, easy to understand. Business, Technology and Life is all about interesting questions and finding answers to them. So this is a blog about finding right and real answers (which I can understand)to seemingly complex questions, and also about what I think and feel, about IT, about people, about other things under the sun...

Mainframes..reclaiming lost ground?

I attended a SI partner meet hosted by IBM last week. It was interesting to see IBM’s aggressive stance on the mainframe machines.

One of their booths was titled “ The future runs on System Z!” :)

While a large majority of the IT universe (users, vendors and consultants) continue to wish away the mainframe predicting its demise anytime soon, the old veteran continues to survive.

It seems that IBM wants to leverage the powerful trends of virtualisation, cloud computing, and green technologies to restore the Mainframe machine to its lost glory and reclaim the ground it lost in the last 2 decades since the advent of desktop.

IBM is now steadily making investments and increasing its thrust on mainframe focussed computing and platforms.

It effectively controls the entire mainframe market with other playes either dead or reduced to marginal plays in limited geographies.

If this strategy works out, IBM would have taken the battle of enterprise computing to areas where it can frame the rules and carve out the battle ground to its advantage.

Communicating well...the incompetence...

Long time back, not very long back though.., I would be impressed when I met a techie or a manager who was good at communicating his thoughts and his ideas, and would be impressed. Am not sure about that any more...Things seem to be changing.

With an excessive focus on communication in the IT world, it seems that competence and execution seem to have taken a back seat.

Now every time I meet some one who communicates well, I am more weary and alert than impressed and I double check and triple check if the person really knows what he is talking about and can deliver on what he is saying.

It seems that a lot of people who are good in communicating their thoughts are using these skills more to cover their incompetence, explain beautifully what the other person should be doing, and explain even more beautifully what they themselves need not or should not do.

So much for the so called "communication skills" which is deemed so important...

Getting started...

My first post…to start at the very beginning…about the title...

I do believe in it!

In business, or in technology, or in life, no matter how complex it looks, or it sounds , or even if it actually is, it is never so complex that it cannot be explained in simple language and explained in terms of a few simple but fundamental principles.

It is our inability, or unwillingness, to deconstruct the complexity to simple basics, and our tendency to complicate the simple facts, which lead to most, or sometimes all of the problems!
